Where to Stay:
New: Yowie
An extension of designer Shannon Maldonado’s modern lifestyle shop of the same name, this new 15-room boutique hotel allows you to see the designer’s playful curation skills come to life. The decorating is a love letter to the Pennsylvanian city, with landscaping, art and accents all sourced from local businesses and artists. Take advantage of the on-site café, and find souvenirs at Yowie’s shop.

Classic: Morris House Hotel
History buffs will love this hotel. Located in the centre of Philly’s Historic District, the building dates back to 1787 and everything from the garden courtyard to the guest room interiors nods to the city’s important role in American history. There are 17 charming rooms and suites, some of which have kitchenettes.

Where to Eat:
New: Kalaya
This much-loved Thai restaurant, in a new space in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood, is helmed by award-winning owner and chef Chutatip “Nok” Suntaranon. The drinks menu includes Bangkok street food favorites such as beer slushies and pandan and coconut soda, and dishes like the Pla Muk Yaang (grilled squid) and Goong Phao (grilled prawns) are where the kitchen shines.

Classic: Friday Saturday Sunday
One of the most venerable fine-dining institutions in the city — and the James Beard Foundation’s 2023 winner for Outstanding Restaurant — this resto features an indulgent eight-course tasting menu. The light-filled, upper-level dining room is an intimate hideaway after a busy day of exploring.

What to See:
New: Philadelphia Museum of Art
In 2021, after a four-year renovation led by Frank Gehry, the refreshed areas of the museum opened to the public. Don’t miss the exhibition, Stephen Burks: Shelter in Place, a look at the past 10 years of furniture, fixtures and craft from the industrial designer.

Classic: Barnes Foundation
Celebrating its 100th anniversary last year, the art institute is home to an exciting collection of impressionist, postimpressionist and modern art. One featured exhibit, Marie Laurencin: Sapphic Paris, looks at how the artist placed women at the centre of her work. The Barnes is open Thursday through Monday, so plan accordingly.

New: Betsu Studio
This Etsy shop turned warehouse showroom features an eclectic vintage collection, with a focus on mid-century pieces. Owner Laura Weiszer has a thing for chairs, lighting and primary colors: Betsu is a welcome reminder to have fun while decorating! By appointment only.

At this boutique rug and home store, find finely made Persian and modern rugs, the store’s own line, plus lighting, mirrors, textiles, stationery and more.
