For over a decade, Canadian designer Brooke Butler has been creating beautiful homes with the same guiding mantra in mind. “My goal is to design spaces that marry form with function and have a deep connection with nature,” says Brooke. In a recent cross-country move from Ontario to Alberta, Brooke brought it home in the transformation of a circa-1986 bungalow. The ranch-style house sits on a private golf course and is only one hour from Canmore. “It’s a rare blend of natural beauty and tranquillity within a city like Calgary,” says Brooke. As for the design style, it was evident from the first time she saw it. “I was drawn to this house for its mid-century modern vibe,” says Brooke.

See how Brooke weaves mid-century modern elements throughout her home, including the preservation of wood-clad ceilings, a sunken living room, a wood-burning fireplace and a handful of mid-century light fixtures. “My design approach is rooted in mid-century principles while my aesthetic is defined by clean, contemporary lines coupled with textures, materials and hues inspired by nature.”

We chatted with Brooke on her coast-to-coast move and what went into re-imagining this mid-century modern house. Scroll down to see the full transformation!

For these homeowners, arriving at Argyll Farm is like taking a breath.

For Alex Gosselin, arriving at Argyll Farm is like taking a breath. The Bolton, Que., property that she shares with her husband Sebastien Kaine and their two boys is a little more than an hour’s drive from their Montreal home — just long enough to decompress from city life. What started as a weekend escape has become a passion project for Sebastien, who raises Wagyu beef on the property, and a way of life for the whole family. “It’s not that I don’t feel at home in the city, but I really feel at home at the farm,” says Alex.

That feeling of contentment is exactly what designers Richard Ouellette (shown with Alex) and Maxime Vandal of Les Ensembliers were hoping to achieve. In fact, it was a deeply personal project for them. Argyll Farm, which includes a circa-1886 five-bedroom farmhouse, is just down the lane from their own country retreat, Humminghill Farm, and they have known the couple for years.

Josh Greenbaum has always had an eye for detail, something he relied on when he started crunching numbers at accounting firm Ernst & Young. That meticulous attention would help him segue into working with Vogue Homes, his family’s construction and development company. In 2018, Josh swapped spreadsheets for Sheetrock and joined the business his grandfather started in the late 1960s. Once he began working with his father on the planning, marketing, construction and selling of Vogue Homes (an uncle and cousin manage the infrastructure side of the business), he discovered a new passion.

“Every time we had a model home, I would get them set up for public viewing,” says Josh. “And the more I was exposed to design, the more enthralled I became.” He helped clients select their finishes in Vogue Homes’ design studio and, on the side, he began advising friends on their own spaces. In 2021, he launched Josh Greenbaum Design, and this custom house by Vogue Homes in Thornhill, Ont., was his firm’s first project. Josh liberally mixes high and low for balance, often installing affordable elements with higher-end finishes like custom plaster details. The principal bathroom’s handmade wall tile looks perfectly imperfect when juxtaposed by a smooth, expansive marble floor. Ribbed glass inserts in the kitchen cabinets break up the millwork, and the front entry’s 20-foot-high ceiling feels less imposing with a frame of applied molding inset with wallpaper along one wall.

It’s not often you know a house is The One without even stepping through the front door. But for artist Ronda Diamond and Richard Cherney, a lawyer, a video tour was all it took to fall head over heels for this Knowlton, Que., charmer — which came impeccably furnished, down to the last detail. “It was just so pretty,” says Ronda.

Montreal designer Luke Havekes had bought the hilltop house as an investment, then gutted and decorated it. Having already renovated a condo and house in Montreal for Ronda and Richard, he knew they’d appreciate his fearless take, and the location. “It’s in an area that’s more Hamptons than mountains, with pastoral fields, farmland and horses,” says Luke. That said, the house, built in 1977, was a mess when he started; it needed everything from new plumbing and electrical to better balconies, windows and a roof. Luke’s makeover took just over a year, and he gave himself carte blanche on the decorating. “This house is layered and eclectic in a pared-down way, not packed to the rafters — it feels full and cozy,” he says.

“I always say that Hazeldean found us, we didn’t find Hazeldean,” says Kyle Timothy Blood of the picturesque Prince Edward Island farmhouse he now calls home. For the Maine-born NYC designer and his husband, acupuncturist Dean Perry, it was after several trips to Canada’s East Coast in search of a summer residence when they realized a certain late-Victorian farmhouse with a rich history was calling their names — and not just for part of the year.

Kyle (right) has always loved decorating his clients’ vacation homes in the Hamptons and Cape Cod, so it’s no surprise he’d be drawn to P.E.I., too. “When we first vacationed here, I was struck by the expansiveness of the sky, the quality of light and the briny sea air,” says Kyle. Moving here in 2018 full time with their dogs Tucker and Luca in tow was a natural next step. Kyle opened a design studio in Charlottetown to complement his American business in East Hampton, N.Y., and he now works with clients on both sides of the border.

When you know, you know…or you take an educated guess. Designer Betsy Brown knew the Green River area of North Carolina, a popular rafting and kayaking spot in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where her daughter Sara Bell ran a wilderness adventure company. She had driven by the house years before, when she was looking for a vacation place near her family, and had eventually found the listing on a real-estate website — it was a 20th-century house in the American vernacular style: a pastiche of ranch, cracker and mid-century styles.

Sarah MacDonald is a soprano. Not a “Soprano” — the other kind. The former opera singer, who’s belted out the Canadian anthem at Toronto Blue Jays games, has lots to sing about these days: she and her husband, Jason MacDonald, have just put the finishing touches on their beautiful new bungalow. “It’s the first house we’ve built together, so it’s special,” says Sarah of the four-bedroom, 1,950-square-foot red brick and limestone home in Lindsay, Ont., the quaint town where the high school sweethearts grew up. The couple lives there with Lily, their French bulldog. “She’s a soprano, too,” laughs Sarah of her furry backup singer with a penchant for Puccini.

For the seven-month-long new-build project, Sarah and Jason collaborated with Oshawa, Ont., designer Nicole Thomas of Thomas Interiors + Design. It was a surprising move, since Jason and Sarah are themselves in the design world: they’re the founders and co-owners of Lighthouse Cabinetry, which Jason runs, and furniture and lighting store Light House Co., which Sarah leads. “It’s good to have an extra set of eyes so you stay on course in a renovation, especially when it’s your own project,” says Jason.

We’ve seen HGTV Canada designer Sarah Richardson tackle off-grid farmhouses, rental cottages, and country escapes and now she’s just completed her most expensive project to date for the new show: Sarah’s Mountain Escape. She and her team overhaul a classic alpine-style chalet called Haus Heidi in Whistler B.C.  The house is a dated 5,000-square-foot chalet formerly used as a B&B. The premiere of the show airs tonight on HGTV Canada, but we wanted to give you a sneak peek of some of the rooms you’ll be seeing. Scroll down!

Brian's 10th Princess Margaret showhome carves out defined spaces with an airy palette.

Does this scenario sound familiar? You and your partner are both navigating Zoom calls when the kids burst into the room laughing, triggering a raucous barking fit from the dog. This year’s 2022 Princess Margaret Cancer Centre Home Lottery Showhome is an antidote to all that “togetherness.” It’s a return to spaces that can be made private: a cozy den with a roaring fire — and doors — and social spots like a bar, home theatre and formal dining room, when it’s time to throw open those doors.

In his 10th showhome design, Brian Gluckstein paid homage to what tops the requests of his roster of high-end residential clients, as well as a wish list of features he was eager to try out (hello dog shower for all those pandemic pups, and a climbing wall!). Sited on a quiet corner in South Oakville, Ont., the backyard of this year’s showhome has an expansive velvety lawn shaded by mature cedars and punctuated by a facetted pool and two patio lounge areas.

"It's such a quirky Tudor-meets-mid-century home."

When the mother-and-daughter duo behind design firm By George Collective were looking for a one-of-a-kind design-build project to sink their teeth into in 2020, finding unique properties in Red Deer, Alberta were few and far between. “My mom and I incorporated By George Collective in February of 2020 after a late family member,” says McKenzie Milhousen. “We redevelop homes with a focus on designing for the one or two buyers that can’t live without it, versus designing for the masses.”

When they came across a Tudor Revival corner house surrounded by a bird sanctuary and overlooking Sylvan Lake, they knew they had found the one. The quirky bi-level home had salmon-colored walls and a less-than-ideal layout, but the bones were exactly right. “It had mid-century qualities, curved staircases, arches all over the place, and we leaned into it.” They scooped up the house and got to work providing clever, fresh thinking for common design problems. “We believe luxury is not always defined by square footage but by design-forward details and blurring the lines between historic beauty and modern conveniences.”
