This is my story of designing our renovation of a century-old lakehouse in Ontario. Each month, I’ll offer a new chapter on the challenges and solutions, and a peek at our progress. You’ll be able to see the actual house come together on new episodes of our video series The Lakehouse.

If you’re been following this series in print and seen our videos, then you know that our lakehouse looks like a huge space. In fact, the pictures and videos are deceptive. It’s true that the house is very wide and the great room, with its soaring cathedral ceiling, makes it feel especially spacious. On the other hand, there is no basement. I don’t know about you, but the basement of my city house is where it all happens. It’s where we work out, do projects, store everything and — most importantly — do laundry.

Laundry is a thing with me, so finding a way to create a functional, beautiful laundry room in a small space was my challenge. I started with the list of must-haves: washer, dryer, big laundry sink, extra-wide ironing board and tank iron, drying racks for hand laundry, storage and the all-important mangle. I could actually fit all of that into my new mudroom, but then I wouldn’t have a mudroom. You see, I had already planned to have coat storage, a tall integrated freezer and a wine fridge in my mudroom, along with a bench and dog shower.

Wrapped in pristine stretches of Caesarstone, bespoke cabinetry and herringbone-laid slate flooring worthy of a French château, this serene space by Karla Amadatsu of Kerrisdale Design is the height of laundry room fashion. It’s larger and more carefully considered than many kitchens, and outfitted with all the bells and whistles — from designer lighting to nickel hardware to Belgian linen blinds — all in pursuit of Karla’s preferred “new traditional” look.

“We were fortunate to be able to plan out this space from scratch in conjunction with the architect and the design of the rest of the home,” says Karla. “And we had a good amount of space to work with to make it really functional.” Two washers, a dryer, long counters for folding and plenty of space to hang clothes let the homeowners — a young professional couple with two small children and a new puppy — tackle laundry with flair.

Karla’s goal for this room was to make it equal parts functional and beautiful. “By locating the laundry at the front of the house, we were able to give it an expansive, beautiful mullioned window,” she says. “Working in this laundry room is anything but dreary.”

A closet rod runs the length of the two washers and dryer, providing space for hanging clothes to dry. It’s set high enough to accommodate shirts, jackets and children’s dresses — plus stacks of folded laundry on the counter below. The cabinetry above houses out-of-season supplies.

Full-height Shaker-style cabinetry is a natural spot to stash an army of utilitarian necessities. Nickel finishes on the contemporary pendant, hardware and faucet elevate the look. A laundry chute hidden in the mudroom cabinetry next door means no one has to wrestle overflowing baskets down the stairs.

The Home Edit‘s Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin are passionate about organizing everything from kitchens to closets, but they have a soft spot for one room in particular. “Laundry rooms are the unsung hero of the house,” says Clea. “I put a lot of thought into mine, I was like, ‘This is a great spot to shine,’” adds Joanna. We sat down with the organizers to the stars — who have worked with Busy Phillips, Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon and more — to break down their best organization tips for a space that is both functional and beautiful.

1. Carefully consider storage. One of the biggest design mistakes the organization duo sees is inefficient storage. Install floating shelves, drying racks and hanging storage on the door to maximize space.

2. Hide dirty clothes in stylish laundry hampers. There are so many covetable hampers on the market that are both practical and pleasing to the eye. Clea and Joanna recommend getting a divided hamper to keep whites and darks separate (see: The Home Edit’s customizable canvas hamper on wheels, which also makes depositing clean laundry throughout the house a breeze).

3. Save space with an innovative washer and dryer. It’s important to invest in a machine that takes the guess work out of doing your laundry. Washing machines that store a whole bottle of detergent and dispense the perfect amount each load are major time-savers, plus built-in water stations mean there is no need for a sink. “The functionality of the machine means you have to store less so your shelves are less cluttered,” says Clea.

4. Take products out of their packaging. One of The Home Edit’s top tips when organizing a space is put products into sleek containers. Whether it’s plastic bins, glass jars or clear turntables, your laundry essentials will instantly look more put together.

5. Don’t be afraid to make a statement. “The laundry room has become a much more whimsical design-inspired space,” says Clea. She recommends treating it like you would a powder room: add a bold tile on the floor or eye-catching wallpaper for major wow-factor. Joanna agrees. “You can have fun with it because there’s so little that needs to happen there — it’s just one job: [doing your laundry].”

Taking advantage of the room’s height, Jenna installed navy cabinets up to the ceiling, which offers ample storage for off-season items. The deep Blanco Liven laundry sink integrates perfectly with the white quartz countertop, and a coordinating pull-down faucet and soap dispenser completes the look. The built-in laundry hamper, closet rod, bench and broom closet make the room very organized and functional for a young family. Placing the washer and dryer on a raised pedestal makes it easier to access, too. Brass accents, a hexagonal tile backsplash and geometric wallpaper complete the room’s contemporary vibe.
