The mid-century modern aesthetic, a popular style of architecture and furniture that first appeared from the mid-1930s to the mid-1960s, has captured the design hearts of many. Furniture from this era is understated yet finely crafted, with simple forms, clean lines and no extra ornamentation. Versatile, attractive and functional, mid-century modern pieces are known for blending well with other aesthetics to punch up any interior.

“Mid-century modern architecture is known for emphasizing warm woods, especially walnut, and the original house was no exception. We wanted to extend this palette but keep the space very modern, which is how we ended up with a two-tone kitchen,” says architect Brenda Izen of this two-tone kitchen.

This color-saturated kitchen is bursting with retro accents, reminiscent of a mid-century kitchen. “This space is a bit of a throwback,” says designer Anne Hepfer, referencing the Saarinen chairs. “I used the rug as a canvas to make the sculptural shape of the chairs stand out.”

This boat-shaped bungalow hadn’t been updated since the 1970’s until designer Jacklyn Peters brought it back to life in 2006. She managed to preserve its mid-century charm by bringing in low-profile furniture and minimal fixtures. The iconic Eames lounge chair with ottoman says it all.
